Authentic Brazilian Desserts

If you follow Tasty Recollections, you already know that this blog is deeply inspired by my Brazilian grandma—her love, her warmth, and especially her famous desserts. She had a way of making every sweet treat feel like a hug, and today, I want to share that feeling with you. She was a caterer for years, and her brigadeiros were legendary—always the first to disappear at school events, church gatherings, and family celebrations. In that spirit, I’ve put together a collection of authentic Brazilian desserts that bring back childhood memories, family gatherings, and the simple joy of homemade sweets. Whether you’re looking for something new to try or longing for a taste of home, these desserts will make your heart (and taste buds) happy.

FYI I’ll also be updating this post as I add more recipes to the site, so be sure to check back!

Brazilian Dessert Recipes You Need to Try (Easy & Authentic!)

1
chocolate brigadeiros in a circle
Traditional Brigadeiro Recipe
If there’s one thing every Brazilian child grows up loving, it’s brigadeiro. These little fudgy chocolate truffles made with condensed milk and cocoa powder are the heart of every birthday party, a symbol of celebration, and an instant dose of happiness. My grandma made and sold these for years, and even after she retired, she still brought them to every event—where they were always the first to go! This is the traditional chocolate brigadeiro, but there are endless variations. If you want to try something truly special, check out this crème brûlée brigadeiro—a recipe from my sister-in-law that might just be one of the best brigadeiros I’ve ever made and tasted!

Bright orange, ultra-moist, and topped with a gooey chocolate glaze—this cake is a staple in every Brazilian home. It’s the cake of childhood, the taste of home, and one of my absolute favorites. This was one of my grandma’s recipes, and now, it’s my husband’s favorite dessert.

4
brazilian flan pudim
Brazilian Flan (Pudim)
Every Brazilian family has a version of pudim, and it always brings back memories of big family meals, where someone inevitably sneaks an extra slice when no one’s looking. This was my grandma’s very own favorite recipe—she made it often, and I always think about her when I eat it. Smooth, creamy, and with the most beautiful caramelized top, this dessert is timeless.

Torta alema, Brazilian IceBox Cake
Brazilian Ice Box Cake (Torta Alema)
I’ve got a recipe close to my heart that brings back fond memories of my grandfather. He wasn’t big on sweets, but every time we visited this quaint restaurant called Taberna Alpina in Teresópolis, Brazil, he’d always ask for the same dessert – German Pie (Torta Alemã), or as I like to call it, a Brazilian Icebox Cake. Now, the name might be a bit misleading, as it’s not really German, but let’s roll with it. So, what exactly is an icebox cake? Well, it’s a delightful dessert made by layering cookies with whipped cream, creating a cake-like treat that chills in the fridge until it’s perfectly set. It is a simple dessert, yet oh-so-delicious!

Brazilian Pave
Pave
A Brazilian Christmas classic, this layered delight is creamy, sweet, and perfect for any time of year, but it always shines brightest around the holidays. And yes, every Brazilian knows the famous joke—”é pavê ou pra comer?”

9
Waknut Cake (Bolo de Nozes)
Let me tell you about my grandma and her famous Christmas Walnut Cake. It was the cake of the season, a classic recipe that graced the holiday table every single year. Everyone adored it! But here’s the thing—I had never actually made it myself. Why? Because her handwritten recipe in her old notebook was so vague, it could have been written in code!
The other day, I was flipping through a recipe book I own and stumbled upon a similar cake. Guess what? The author said it was inspired by her grandma’s recipe! Well, if two grandmas were making this cake, it had to be a universal grandma thing, right? I pulled out both recipes, compared them, and voilà—they were almost identical! My grandma’s version was just a touch sweeter and made in smaller batches—she only ever made about half the recipe. But otherwise, they matched up perfectly!

10
sliced chocolate spiced cake
Chocolate Spice Cake (Pao de Mel)
This spiced honey cake is usually made as an individually sized treat, but I love making this cake version because it’s simpler, easier, and delivers the same flavors with less work. Although it’s enjoyed year-round, if you live in North America, the addition of spices will make you think of Christmas—and why not?

Bakery Style Brigadeiro Cake

Broinhas de fuba, Brazilian corn bites, broas on plate with flowers
Brazilian Corn Bites (Broinha de Fuba)
These little corn-flour bites are a staple in Brazilian kitchens—the kind of treat a grandma would bake on a cozy afternoon. With a rustic, slightly crispy exterior and a soft, delicate center, they strike the perfect balance of sweetness and texture. Enjoy them with a cup of coffee, or take them to the next level with dulce de leche or guava paste. And the best part? They’re naturally gluten-free!

Tropical Pumpkin Coconut loaf sliced and served on a plate, with fork, pumpkins and sliced loaf on the background
Pumpkin Coconut Loaf
This pumpkin cake is unlike anything you’ve tried before. While North Americans pair pumpkin with spices, in Brazil, we mix it with coconut—no spices needed. It might sound unexpected, but trust me, the result is pure magic.

romeo and juliet cheesecake
Romeo and Juliet Cheesecake Recipe
This cheesecake had to be here because it’s simply one of the best I’ve ever had. In Brazil, guava and cheese are known as the “Romeo and Juliet” combo—two flavors destined to be together. While cheesecake wasn’t common when I was growing up, it has since become hugely popular, and every Brazilian who hears “cheesecake” immediately imagines it paired with guava.
