Brazilian Lemonade (Made with Fresh Lemons!)

Jump to Recipe Jump to Video Print Recipe

If there’s one thing you’ll always find in our house during the summer, it’s something with lemon. My kids are just as obsessed as I am, so I’m always looking for excuses to make our favorite lemon treats. If you’ve tried my Brazilian Lemon Pie or my Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake, you already know our love for all things citrus.

Today was one of those hot afternoons when everyone wanted something cold, so instead of grabbing juice from the fridge, I made a pitcher of Brazilian Lemonade. It took less than 10 minutes, and before I even had a chance to put the blender away, the kids were already asking for refills.

The funny thing is that despite the name, Brazilian Lemonade is traditionally made with limes in Brazil because they’re usually easier to find and more affordable than lemons. This time, though, I used lemons simply because I had a big bowl of them sitting on my counter—and honestly, I love their bright, fresh flavor.

Whether you make yours with lemons or limes, one thing is certain: this creamy, refreshing drink disappears fast around here.

Why You’ll Love This Brazilian Lemonade

There are plenty of lemonade recipes out there, but this Brazilian version is something special. Sweetened condensed milk transforms a simple citrus drink into a creamy, frothy treat that’s refreshing enough for a hot summer day and delicious enough to feel like dessert.

It’s one of those recipes that takes just minutes to make, yet everyone always asks for a second glass.

You’ll love it because it’s:

  • Ready in about 10 minutes.
  • Made with just a handful of simple ingredients.
  • Creamy, sweet, and perfectly refreshing.
  • A family-friendly drink both kids and adults enjoy.
  • Perfect for BBQs, birthdays, picnics, and summer afternoons.

What Is Brazilian Lemonade?

Despite the name, Brazilian Lemonade is traditionally made with fresh limes, not lemons.

In Brazil, limes are generally easier to find and more affordable than lemons, so they’re the citrus fruit most people use for this popular drink. The recipe combines fresh citrus, water, sugar, and sweetened condensed milk to create a creamy, frothy beverage that’s unlike any traditional lemonade.

For this version, I used lemons because I love their bright, fresh flavor and happened to have plenty at home. The result is just as delicious—slightly sweeter and a little less tart—making it a wonderful twist on the Brazilian classic.

Whether you choose lemons or limes, you’ll end up with a refreshing drink that’s sure to become a family favorite.

Ingredients You’ll Need

One of the best things about Brazilian Lemonade is that it uses everyday ingredients you may already have in your kitchen.

Fresh lemons
The star of this recipe. Fresh lemons provide bright citrus flavor and plenty of juice. Choose lemons that feel heavy for their size, as they’ll usually be the juiciest.

Sweetened condensed milk
This is what makes Brazilian Lemonade so unique. It adds sweetness while creating the creamy texture that makes every sip smooth and refreshing.

Ice
Brazilian Lemonade is always best served ice cold.

How to Make Brazilian Lemonade

Wash the limes, trim the ends, quarter them, and remove the white center. Add the limes, sweetened condensed milk, and ice to a blender. Pulse 3 times to avoid bitterness. Strain. Pour over ice and serve immediately.

Tips for the Best Brazilian Lemonade

A few simple tricks will help you make the perfect pitcher every time.

  • Blend the lemons for only a few seconds to prevent bitterness.
  • Always strain the mixture before adding the condensed milk.
  • Start with cold water for the most refreshing drink.
  • Taste before serving and adjust the sweetness if needed.
  • Serve immediately while it’s fresh and frothy.

Recipe Variations

Want to change things up? Here are a few fun ideas.

  • Use fresh limes for a more traditional Brazilian version.
  • Blend with extra ice for a frozen slushy-style drink.
  • Add a handful of fresh mint for a cooling twist.
  • Stir in sparkling water just before serving for a fizzy version.
  • Garnish with lemon slices and mint leaves for parties or special occasions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Brazilian Lemonade creamy?

The sweetened condensed milk is what gives the drink its signature creamier texture while balancing the tart citrus flavor.

Can I make it ahead of time?

Brazilian Lemonade is best enjoyed immediately after blending. As it sits, the citrus can become more bitter and the frothy texture will begin to disappear.

If you have leftovers, refrigerate them in an airtight container for up to 24 hours and stir well before serving.

Can I reduce the sugar?

Absolutely. If your lemons are naturally sweet, you may find that you need less sugar. Start with a smaller amount and adjust to your taste.

Can kids drink Brazilian Lemonade?

Definitely! It’s one of my kids’ favorite summer treats. The creamy sweetness makes it especially appealing to little ones.

What to Serve with Brazilian Lemonade

This refreshing drink pairs beautifully with so many meals.

Serve it alongside burgers, grilled chicken, hot dogs, sandwiches, or your favorite BBQ recipes. It’s also delicious with Brazilian favorites like pão de queijo, coxinha, or feijoada.

And if you’re a fellow lemon lover like we are, finish the meal with a slice of my Brazilian Lemon Pie or Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake for the ultimate citrus-inspired dessert.

How to Store Brazilian Lemonade

Brazilian Lemonade is at its absolute best the day it’s made.

If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight pitcher or mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Give the drink a good stir before serving, as the condensed milk may naturally settle.

I don’t recommend freezing it, since the creamy texture changes once thawed.

Equipment

  • blender
  • fine mesh sieve

Ingredients

  • 1 large lemon
  • 2 cups cold water
  • 3 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
  • 150 g ice cubes about 1¼ cups
  • extra ice for serving
  • lemon slices for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Wash the lemon thoroughly. Trim off both ends, cut it into quarters, and remove the white center and any seeds.
  • Add the lemon quarters and cold water to a blender. Pulse 3 times, being careful not to overblend, as the peel can become bitter.
  • Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve, pressing gently to extract as much juice as possible. Return the strained juice to the blender.
  • Add the sweetened condensed milk and 150 g (about 1¼ cups) of ice cubes. Blend until smooth, creamy, and frothy.
  • Fill two glasses with extra ice, pour in the Brazilian Lemonade, garnish with lemon slices if desired, and serve immediately.

Notes

* Blend the lemon for only a few seconds to prevent bitterness from the peel.
* Fresh lemons provide the best flavor.
* Brazilian Lemonade is best enjoyed immediately while it’s cold and frothy.
* Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours. Stir well before serving, as the condensed milk may settle.
* For a more traditional Brazilian version, substitute fresh limes for the lemons.
