A great weeknight recipe! You know, the kind that you are willing to make even after a very long day, but, that still delivers big on flavor. Well, today’s your lucky day because I’ve got just the thing: a Quick Asian-inspired beef bowl that checks all the boxes and won’t break the bank!
I you like quick and delicious dinners I recommend you also check out some of our readers favorite recipes like cornmeal crusted salmon, pan fried tilapia and herb pork tenderloin.
This recipe is a game-changer for anyone tired of the same old dinner routine. But fair warning: once you taste it, you might find yourself going back for seconds (and maybe thirds). It’s that good! So let’s dive right in and whip up something delicious together.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Ingredients
Sauce Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp Hoisin Sauce (or sub with Oyster)
- 1/4 cup Oyster Sauce
- 2 tbsp Mirin
- 1/3 cup soy sauce (I used reduced-sodium soy sauce)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
Stir Fry
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 5 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 small onion, finely chopped
- 800 g /2 lb ground beef lean or extra lean ground beef
- 2 Bell Peppers ( yellow, orange or red bell peppers)
- 1/2 tsp of ground ginger (you can also use fresh ginger)
- 1/2 cup green onions, sliced, plus more for garnish (optional)
- Sesame seeds (optional)
Directions:
- Start by combining the hoisin sauce, mirin, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and brown sugar in a small bowl. Give it a good stir to ensure everything is well combined.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet or pot over high heat. Sautee the onions for two minutes. Add the garlic and saute for another minute until it starts to brown.
- Add the beef breaking it up as it cooks. Stir occasionally to ensure even browning.
- Add your chopped bell peppers. once the beef turns from red to brown, it’s ready for the next step.
- Pour the prepared sauce over the cooked beef in the skillet. Let it simmer for another two minutes.
- Stir in the green onions if using and garnish with some sesame seeds (if using).
Pairings:
I like to serve this over a bed of rice, but feel free to get creative with your sides! Try serving it with brown rice, or over quinoa for a healthier twist or alongside your favorite veggies or even a fried egg for a complete meal. For extra freshness, you can serve it with a side of crunchy Asian slaw or a simple cucumber salad.
Storage
If you somehow manage to have leftovers (trust me, it’s hard to resist going back for seconds), store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Simply reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop until heated through before enjoying again.
Common Substitutions
Don’t have hoisin sauce on hand? No problem! You can easily substitute it with oyster sauce for a similar flavor profile. If you’re out of mirin, Chinese cooking wine, dry sherry, or sake make excellent alternatives. You can also substitute the soy sauce I used in this recipe for dark soy sauce. Just keep in mind it will make the colour of your beed darker and more intense. Feel free to customize the recipe with whatever ingredients you have on hand!
Variations
This recipe is incredibly versatile, so feel free to get creative and make it your own! You can switch up the protein by using ground chicken, ground turkey, or ground pork instead of beef. Add your favorite vegetables to the mix for extra nutrition and flavor or add a touch of sesame oil or red pepper flakes if you like spicy food. (not the case over here, I already struggle with my picky eaters without trying to make them east spicy food). Anyway, the possibilities are endless!
Troubleshooting
If your sauce is too thick, simply add a splash of water to thin it out to your desired consistency. On the other hand, if it’s too thin, you can simmer it for a few extra minutes to reduce and thicken. Adjust the seasoning to taste and tailor the recipe to suit your preferences.
