Ingredients

Sauce Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons Oyster Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Mirin or sub Chinese cooking wine
  • 3 tablespoons light soy sauce I used reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons dark soy sauce
  • 4 teaspoons brown sugar

Stir-Fry Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 5 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 small onions finely chopped
  • 900 g /2 lb ground beef lean or extra lean ground beef
  • 2 Bell Peppers yellow, orange or red bell peppers
  • 1/2 tsp of ground ginger you can also use fresh ginger
  • 1/2 cup green onions sliced, plus more for garnish (optional)
  • Sesame seeds optional

Instructions

  • Start by combining the mirin, soy sauces, oyster sauce, and brown sugar in a small bowl. Give it a good stir to ensure everything is well combined.
    6 tablespoons Oyster Sauce, 2 tablespoons Mirin, 3 tablespoons light soy sauce, 2 tablespoons dark soy sauce, 4 teaspoons brown sugar
  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet or pot over high heat. Sautee the onions for two minutes. Add the garlic and saute for another minute until it starts to brown.

  • Add the beef. Break it up as it cooks. Stir occasionally to ensure even browning.

  • Add your chopped bell peppers. Once the beef turns from red to brown, it's ready for the next step.

  • Pour the prepared sauce over the cooked beef in the skillet. Let it simmer for another two minutes.
  • Stir in the green onions if using and garnish with some sesame seeds (if using).

Notes

  1. Mirin
    Can be swapped with Chinese cooking wine or cooking sake. 
  2. Soy Sauce
    This recipe uses a mix of dark and light soy sauce for the best flavor and color. You can use just light/all-purpose or only dark, but the beef color and taste will vary slightly.
  3. Storage
    Leftovers keep up to 4 days in the fridge or 3 months in the freezer. Reheat in the microwave or on the stove until hot.
