Here’s what you’ll need:
Ingredients
Sauce Ingredients and Substitutions:
Oyster Sauce
Adds deep, savory umami flavor. Youāll find it near the soy sauce in the Asian aisle.
Mirin
A sweet rice wine used in Japanese cooking. I usually order mine from Amazon, but itās also easy to find at Asian grocery stores (Mississauga folks, Galleria always had it!).
Soy Sauce
This recipe uses both light and dark soy sauce:
ā Light is milder and great for seasoning.
ā Dark is richer and adds color.
If you only have light soy sauce, just use that. But skip using only dark soy sauceāitās too intense on its own.
Brown Sugar
Adds just the right touch of sweetness to balance the savory.
Olive Oil
I use olive oil because itās always on hand. For a more traditional flavor, you can use sesame oil instead.
Stir-Fry Ingredients
- Garlic : Fresh garlic adds a strong, aromatic base.
- Small Onion: Adds sweetness and depth to the stir-fry.
- Ground Beef: Use lean or extra-lean ground beef for the best results.
- Bell Peppers: Yellow, orange, or red peppers bring sweetness, crunch, and vibrant color.
- Ground Ginger : A pinch of ground ginger works well, but you can use fresh ginger for a brighter flavor.
- Green Onions : Add freshness to the dish and can also be used as garnish.
- Sesame Seeds (optional): Sprinkle on top for a nutty finish.
Directions Overview:
- Mix the hoisin, mirin, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and brown sugar in a bowl and set it aside.
- Cook the onions, garlic, beef, and peppers in some olive oil, pour in the sauce,
- Let it simmer for a couple of minutes, and toss in green onions and sesame seeds if you want.
Pairings:
I like to serve this over a bed of rice, but feel free to get creative with your sides! Try serving it with brown rice, or over quinoa for a healthier twist or alongside your favorite veggies or even a fried egg for a complete meal. For extra freshness, you can serve it with a side of crunchy Asian slaw or a simple cucumber salad.
Storage
If you somehow manage to have leftovers (trust me, it’s hard to resist going back for seconds), store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Simply reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop until heated through before enjoying again.
Common Substitutions
If you’re out of mirin, Chinese cooking wine, or sake make excellent alternatives. You can also substitute the light soy sauce I used in this recipe for just dark soy sauce. Just keep in mind it will make the colour of your beef darker and more intense. Feel free to customize the recipe with whatever ingredients you have on hand!
Variations
This recipe is incredibly versatile, so feel free to get creative and make it your own! You can switch up the protein by using ground chicken, ground turkey, or ground pork instead of beef. Add your favorite vegetables to the mix for extra nutrition and flavor or add a touch of sesame oil or red pepper flakes if you like spicy food. (not the case over here, I already struggle with my picky eaters without trying to make them east spicy food). Anyway, the possibilities are endless!
Troubleshooting
If your sauce is too thick, simply add a splash of water to thin it out to your desired consistency. On the other hand, if it’s too thin, you can simmer it for a few extra minutes to reduce and thicken. Adjust the seasoning to taste and tailor the recipe to suit your preferences.
