Hello friends! The holiday season is upon us, and I often get questions about Brazilian Christmas food traditions. I thought this would be the perfect time to link all the festive recipes weâve shared so far. Recently, someone asked me if Brazilians barbecue on Christmas Day. I understand where theyâre coming from since Christmas falls during summer in Brazil. But, much of Brazilâs Christmas traditions are rooted in European customs and heavily influenced by American holiday movies.

In fact, Iâve never met anyone who barbecues on Christmas Day! Instead, Brazilian Christmas dinners often feature elaborate spreads that reflect our rich culinary heritage. This list is inspired by my grandmotherâs Christmas celebrations and the dishes she lovingly prepared for our family. These recipes are also informed by chatting with family and friends about their traditions.
In Brazil, the big celebration happens on Christmas Eve, with families gathering late at night for an abundant feast. Many attend midnight mass before or after dinner, though that tradition has been fading in recent years. Then, on Christmas Day, itâs common for families to come together again for a more casual lunch, enjoying leftovers from the night before. Itâs a relaxed and comforting tradition that keeps the festive spirit alive, allowing everyone to savor the delicious dishes once more.
If you think I forgot a must-have dish or want to request a recipe, donât hesitate to let me know in the comments. Letâs keep these traditions alive and thriving!

Main Dishes
At my grandmotherâs house, the star of the Christmas Eve dinner was always Christmas turkey or a Chesterâa type of tender, juicy poultry thatâs incredibly popular during the holiday season in Brazil. Chester is a brand of specially-bred chicken known for its plumpness and flavor. I also know some families like to eat codfish as well during Christmas.
Rabanada
I don’t have a Rabanada recipe yet on the blog (comment below if you would like one). However, this woudn;t be a very good list without it. Rabanada is a classic Christmas dessert and its very similar to a french toast.
Phew! I think that’s it! Let me know if I have forgotten anything or if you would like me to add any more recipes đ
Some very important advice:
A Quick Note on Raisins
Now, if youâve ever celebrated Christmas in Brazil, you know that raisins are, well⌠everywhere! They sneak their way into just about every holiday dishârice, farofa, panettone, you name it. Itâs like theyâre the surprise guest at the Christmas dinner party that you didnât exactly invite, but youâve learned to love. So, when in doubt, toss in some raisins! Itâs practically a Brazilian Christmas tradition.
