Traditional Brazilian Christmas Food and Recipes

Hello friends! The holiday season is upon us, and I often get questions about Brazilian Christmas food traditions. I thought this would be the perfect time to link all the festive recipes we’ve shared so far. Recently, someone asked me if Brazilians barbecue on Christmas Day. I understand where they’re coming from since Christmas falls during summer in Brazil. But, much of Brazil’s Christmas traditions are rooted in European customs and heavily influenced by American holiday movies.

Traditional Brazilian Christmas recipes featuring panettone, rice and pave

In fact, I’ve never met anyone who barbecues on Christmas Day! Instead, Brazilian Christmas dinners often feature elaborate spreads that reflect our rich culinary heritage. This list is inspired by my grandmother’s Christmas celebrations and the dishes she lovingly prepared for our family. These recipes are also informed by chatting with family and friends about their traditions.

In Brazil, the big celebration happens on Christmas Eve, with families gathering late at night for an abundant feast. Many attend midnight mass before or after dinner, though that tradition has been fading in recent years. Then, on Christmas Day, it’s common for families to come together again for a more casual lunch, enjoying leftovers from the night before. It’s a relaxed and comforting tradition that keeps the festive spirit alive, allowing everyone to savor the delicious dishes once more.

If you think I forgot a must-have dish or want to request a recipe, don’t hesitate to let me know in the comments. Let’s keep these traditions alive and thriving!

11 Traditional Brazilian Christmas Food and Recipes

1
Brazilian Salpicao Chirstmas Salad with batata palha in a white bowl
Easy Brazilian Salpicao Christmas Salad
A creamy, smoky, and crunchy classic, Salpicão is the heart of every Brazilian Christmas—and the best way to savor those holiday leftovers! This easy-to-make salad combines smoked turkey or ham, crisp apples, and tender veggies with a creamy dressing, all topped with irresistible batata palha (shoestring potatoes) for the perfect finishing touch.
Whether you’re adding it to your Ceia de Natal or just looking for a festive side dish, Salpicão always delivers on flavor. And even if you skip it on Christmas, you can’t deny that this is an excellent way to use up all your turkey and ham leftovers. It’s practical, delicious, and makes sure nothing goes to waste—exactly what the holidays are about!

Brazilian Christmas rice with champagne, raisins, apricots and almonds.
Christmas Rice
If you’re searching for the perfect rice dish to elevate your holiday meal, this Christmas Rice recipe is here to impress! A staple at every festive Brazilian table, it transforms simple white rice into something extraordinary, combining champagne, raisins, apricots, and almonds for a dish that’s as elegant as it is delicious.
Growing up, plain white rice seasoned with garlic and onions was a daily essential. But during the holiday season, we embraced the tradition of making it extra special. In true Brazilian fashion, that often meant adding raisins (because, let’s face it, they make everything feel more festive!).
This Festive Rice perfectly balances sweet and savory flavors, making it an ideal pairing for turkey, fish, or even a simple grilled chicken. The champagne adds a celebratory note, while the dried fruits and nuts lend texture and richness, creating a dish that will make your holiday table sparkle.

farofa recipe with egg in white bowl
Best Brazilian Farofa with Eggs
It’s not Christmas without farofa! This cherished Brazilian side dish holds a special place in my heart and on every holiday table. While farofa is a staple in Brazil year-round, there’s something magical about savoring it during the festive season.
For those unfamiliar, farofa is a flavorful side dish made from cassava flour, often toasted to perfection and enriched with various add-ins. This Egg Farofa recipe, passed down from my grandmother’s kitchen, is my absolute favorite. I vividly remember the meticulous care with which a kind lady who assisted my grandmother prepared it every holiday season.

Brazilian Farofa with eggs Bacon and Sausage
Brazilian Bacon Farofa
If there’s one farofa that’s reserved for special occasions, it’s this one—my Bacon Farofa. Think of it as the upgrade to my everyday farofa, and believe me, it’s worth the wait! Whether it’s a birthday, a holiday gathering, or Christmas, this farofa takes the spotlight.
This is the farofa I break out for the big moments—the ones that bring everyone to the table. With crispy bacon, juicy sausage, and all the mouthwatering bits that make you go back for seconds (or thirds), it’s a dish that makes you feel like you're part of something special.

Brazilian Pave
Classic Brazilian Pave recipe
Pavê is the dessert you can’t escape at a Brazilian family gathering, and for good reason. It’s a delicious, no-bake treat that’s got it all—creamy custard, perfectly softened biscuits, and a decadent chocolate topping that brings it all together. Think of it like a Brazilian twist on trifle, tiramisu, or an icebox cake.
Every family has its version, but the classic pavê is the one people picture when you say the word. And trust me, once you’ve had a bite, you’ll understand why. It’s a dessert that’s so easy to love—it’s like comfort food in a glass.
While there are endless variations (lemon, passion fruit, coffee, dulce de leche, Kit Kat, Oreo—you name it), today we’re sticking with the classic. Simple, familiar, and oh-so-delicious.
And the best part? It’s no-bake, super quick to put together, and can be prepped ahead of time—perfect for the holiday madness when you’re juggling a million things at once. That’s why it’s a Christmas tradition in Brazil; it’s the perfect dessert to make when you don’t have time to fuss but still want to wow the crowd.
Even my picky kids—who’ve been known to turn their noses up at cake because of “weird” frosting—love this pavê. Honestly, if I can get all three of them to happily dive into this dessert, you know it’s a winner.
So, if you’re after an easy, crowd-pleasing treat that’ll bring some nostalgic flavor to your table, this pavê is exactly what you need. Perfect for the holidays—or any time you want to impress without breaking a sweat.

Christmas Walnut Cake Recipe
This Walnut Cake holds a special place in my heart—and I’m pretty sure it will in yours too. It’s a classic, an old-school recipe that’s been passed down through generations, and it's everything you want in a holiday cake. Made with lots of walnuts and eggs (no baking powder needed!), it’s dense, rich, and full of flavor. The filling is said to have been Princess Isabel’s favorite dessert—yes, Brazil had a royal family! (How cool is that?)
Every Christmas, my grandma would bring out this cake, and it was the dessert of the season. It was always there, gracing our holiday table, and everyone adored it. There’s just something magical about it, the way the flavors come together with the walnuts taking center stage. It was a tradition, and I’m thrilled to be able to share it with you today.
If you're looking for a cake that's a little different from the usual holiday sweets, this Walnut Cake is the one. It's not just a dessert—it’s a slice of history and love. A cake that’s been part of my family’s holiday season for as long as I can remember, and now, I’m sharing it with you.

No Knead Chocolate Chip Pannetone
If you’ve ever been to Brazil during Christmas, you know that panettone is everywhere. It’s as much a part of the holiday season as Christmas lights and gingerbread cookies are here. But the thing is, making panettone can be a little intimidating, right? That’s why I’m so excited to share this No Knead Chocolate Chip Panettone recipe with you! It’s soft, rich, and loaded with all the holiday flavors you love—without any of the complicated steps. No kneading, no stress—just pure holiday magic in every bite. And whether you’re Team Traditional (dried fruits) or Team Chocolate Chip, this panettone has you covered. Trust me, the smell alone will make your home feel like Christmas.

Chocolate Spiced Cake (Pao de mel)
Chocolate Spice Cake
Now, if you’re looking for something that’ll wow your guests (or just your family, because let’s be real—they’ll be impressed anyway), this Chocolate Spice Cake is where it’s at. Fluffy, moist, filled with sweet dulce de leche, and topped with a decadent chocolate ganache—it’s a Christmas treat that checks all the boxes. It’s inspired by pão de mel, a beloved Brazilian dessert, and after lots of trial and error, I finally got the texture just right. No more dry cake—this one is super moist and perfect for your holiday spread. Plus, it’s super easy to whip up! So, if you want to bring something festive and delicious to the table, this cake is an absolute must-try.

brazilian flan pudim
Traditional Brazilian Flan (Pudim)
I’ve had so many requests to share my grandmother’s Brazilian Flan (Pudim) recipe, and I’m finally doing it! This dessert is a classic in Brazil and shows up at every special occasion, including Christmas, but for me, it’s tied to years of fond memories from my childhood. Pudim was my grandmother’s absolute favorite dessert, and it was a staple in our home—along with Brazilian carrot cake, which we also had way too often as kids. Funny enough, I wasn’t always the biggest fan back then (chocolate was my jam), but as I've gotten older, I’ve come to appreciate this delicious, creamy flan in a way I never expected.
As I was savoring a slice recently, I thought to myself, “Grandma really knew her stuff. This pudim is pure magic!” The way it’s creamy, just the right amount of sweet, and has that perfect caramel sauce—it’s simply unbeatable. It’s been a tradition for generations, and I’m so happy to pass this recipe down to you. Whether you're making it for a holiday gathering or just because, I know this pudim will have the same impact on your family that it had on mine. Enjoy!

Make Ahead Brazilian Cappuccino Mix
Make-Ahead Brazilian Cappuccino Okay, I’ll admit it—I never had hot chocolate or cappuccino at Christmas in Brazil since it’s summer down there! But now that I live in a colder climate, I’ve made this Make-Ahead Brazilian Cappuccino my go-to for cozy mornings. It’s got that Brazilian twist—chocolate and cinnamon—which makes it feel extra special, even on snowy mornings. The best part? You can make it ahead of time and store it in the freezer (it stays scoopable!). Pair it with a slice of No Knead Panettone for a perfect Christmas breakfast, and you’re all set to enjoy the season with minimal fuss.

yellow Cup of coffee
Brazilian Coffee Recipe
Last but not least, nothing finishes off a meal quite like a cup of Brazilian Coffee. Brazilians enjoy coffee year-round, no matter the season. If you live somewhere colder, though, it’s especially cozy! This recipe shares all the tips to make coffee the Brazilian way—strong, rich, and perfectly brewed. Whether you're serving it after a big meal or sipping on it with a treat, it’s the perfect way to end your Christmas celebration—or any special occasion.

Other Worthy Mentions:

Main Dishes

At my grandmother’s house, the star of the Christmas Eve dinner was always Christmas turkey or a Chester—a type of tender, juicy poultry that’s incredibly popular during the holiday season in Brazil. Chester is a brand of specially-bred chicken known for its plumpness and flavor. I also know some families like to eat codfish as well during Christmas.

Rabanada

I don’t have a Rabanada recipe yet on the blog (comment below if you would like one). However, this woudn’t be a very good list without it. Rabanada is a classic Christmas dessert and its very similar to a French toast.

Phew! I think that’s it! Let me know if I have forgotten anything or if you would like me to add any more recipes 🙂

Some very important advice:

A Quick Note on Raisins
Now, if you’ve ever celebrated Christmas in Brazil, you know that raisins are, well… everywhere! They sneak their way into just about every holiday dish—rice, farofa, panettone, you name it. It’s like they’re the surprise guest at the Christmas dinner party that you didn’t exactly invite, but you’ve learned to love. So, when in doubt, toss in some raisins! It’s practically a Brazilian Christmas tradition.

Celebrate with Love

As we prepare for the festive season, let’s not forget that the heart of these celebrations is gathering with loved ones, sharing stories, and enjoying the delicious dishes that make this time of the year so special. Whether you’re cooking for your whole family or hosting friends, these recipes will help you bring a bit of Brazilian culture to your table.

So, Feliz Natal (Merry Christmas), and may your holiday festivities be filled with joy, laughter, and great food!
