Hello there, fellow moms! Today, I’ve got a fantastic recipe to share with you – a Tropical Smoothie Bowl with Yogurt. I came up with this recipe when my eldest started asking for ice cream regularly. Since I wasn’t keen on that daily dose of sugar, I needed a cold, nutritious alternative that required minimal effort because, let’s face it, most of us are low on kitchen energy after sleep-deprived nights. If you’re serving this to kids, I highly recommend picking the most colorful fruits you can find, because we all know that’s what kids love. It’s a refreshing treat, and if your little one is young enough, they might just believe, like mine did, that they’re eating ice cream.
Now, I can’t promise it’s the ultimate parenting technique, but it sure is a tasty treat. (If you want to skip to the recipe card just click the button above and you will be taken straight to the recipe)
Why should you make this recipe?
Why should you make this recipe?
- It’s incredibly easy: Just toss everything inside your blender, press the button, and you’re on your way to a delicious treat.
- It’s lightning-fast: From start to finish, it takes only 5 minutes to whip it up.
- It is tasty: Its a tasty cold trat with a creamy texture
- Kid-approved: The little ones absolutely love it, making it a fantastic strategy to introduce more fruits into their diet and sneak in extra nutrients cleverly disguised as “toppings.”
- Nutritionally sound: Packed with healthy ingredients, this tropical smoothie bowl is a guilt-free way to enjoy a cool, colorful, and wholesome snack.
Equipment:
You are going to need a high-powered blender, and make sure it’s a good one capable of blending ice, or you might run into trouble with frozen fruit.
Ingredients:
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup of yogurt: I would recommend starting with 1/4 of yogurt. Adding less yogurt means it will be easier for little hands to scoop it up into their mouths. Adding more yogurt makes it harder for little hands…. but perhaps easier for your blender. Start with1/4 then if you think you would like more add more. You can always add more, but you can’t remove it. Also, I think it is a good idea to tell you that I always stick to plain yogurt, not Greek yogurt, as it can turn too sour for the little ones. Trust me; I tried to salvage it with sugar once, and it wasn’t a hit.
- 50g or a packet of chopped frozen fruits with a mix of colors: I prefer one that has pitaya(also called dragon fruit), passion fruit, pineapples, and mangoes for that extra burst of color. I currently have been buying mine from costco.
- 2 tablespoons or more of your preferred sweetener: I’m all about maple syrup but you can add whatever you prefer.
- Toppings of your choice: I usually set out chia seeds, colorful sprinkles, granola, and more fresh fruit for some DIY fun for the kids.
Instructions:
- Add everything to your blender and blend until smooth. You can add more yogurt if your blender struggles, but don’t overdo it; we want it spoonable, not like a milkshake.
2. Once it’s ready, let the kids pick fancy plates and choose their toppings. They love decorating it themselves. This one was the one my daughter did, and since I was taking pictures she wanted me to take a picture of hers. So there it is! her very own masterpiece.
It’s a delightful thick smoothie bowl with a zesty, citrusy tang. I hope your family enjoys this tropical smoothie bowl with yogurt it as much as mine does!
Warning: It can get a bit messy. Expect your kids to end up covered in it and toppings to fly everywhere. But hey, that’s part of the fun, right? Sometimes, though, I’m not in the mood for the cleanup (because I’m only human). In that case, add a little milk of your choice (almond milk, coconut milk, regular milk etc) to make it more liquid, pour it into a sippy cup, and skip the toppings. I learned the hard way that chia seeds and sippy cup openings don’t mix. So don’t do that, you will end up clogging your sippy cup and your kids will be frustrated.

Substitutions:
Fruits: Feel free to get creative with the fruits you use. Sometimes I like to add a frozen banana to it. Either way, the key here is to choose colorful and flavorful fruits that your kids enjoy. Experiment with different combinations to find your family’s favorite fruits!
Yogurt and Sweetner:
You can adapt this recipe to suit dietary restrictions. You can use dairy-free yogurt alternatives like almond or coconut yogurt and choose a sweetener that fits your dietary needs, such as agave nectar or a sugar substitute. Customize it to your family’s preferences.
Toppings: The topping options are endless! Besides our favorite toppings chia seeds, colorful sprinkles, granola, and fruit, other great options would be adding coconut flakes, chopped nuts, chocolate chips, hemp seeds, ground flaxseed or even a drizzle of chocolate or, almond butter or peanut butter for an extra treat. You could also add more sweetness to it by adding more maple syrup or a drizzle of honey, for example. Let your kids get creative with their toppings!
FAQs for Tropical Smoothie Bowl with Yogurt:
I would not. It kind of melts, the texture becomes a little weird, and the taste is a little off. This is one of those things you need to enjoy fresh. But, hey, at least it only takes 5 minutes to do it again 🙂
This smoothie bowl is best enjoyed fresh.
If your blender struggles with frozen fruit, you can try adding a little more yogurt to help with blending. However, be cautious not to overdo it with the yogurt, as it might become too thick to eat with a spoon. Start with a little extra and blend gradually until you reach the desired consistency. Or you could just make a drinkable smoothie instead by adding some milk of your choice to it.
Absolutely! You can easily scale up the ingredients to make a larger batch for family gatherings or parties. Just make sure your blender can handle the increased volume, and adjust the sweetener to taste as needed.
While this tropical smoothie bowl is a fun and nutritious treat, it may not provide all the essential nutrients needed for a balanced breakfast. You can consider adding some protein, like nut butter or protein powder, to make it a more substantial morning meal, or just serve it alongside something else. Another thing to consider is that it is kind of messy, so if you kids are going to school or you need to go to work I would definitely not attempt this as it will just stress you out. This is more of a weekend kind of breakfast or snack option.
Cleaning up after a messy but fun treat is all part of the experience! Have some wet wipes or paper towels handy for quick clean-ups. Or, if its summer…. you can do what I do and just let them enjoy it outside. Work smarter not harder 🙂
I have tried this and it works…. but I thought it was easier with the blender. With the food processor I had to sometimes scrape the sides of it to help it along. Not a problem I had with the blender. So I think the best way to make this would be to use a blender but if you don’t have one, you might be able to get away using a food processor if that is all you have..
