Recipe:

1. Mix Dry Ingredients: 2 cups oats, 1 cup shredded coconut, 1 cup sliced almonds, 1/4 cup chia seeds, and 1/4 cup flax seeds.
2. Warm Wet Ingredients: In a saucepan, melt 1/3 cup coconut oil, 1/3 cup honey, 1/3 cup cocoa powder, and 1 tbsp vanilla over low heat for 1 minute.
3. Combine & Bake: Stir wet mixture into dry, spread on a baking sheet, bake at 180°C (350°F) for 25 mins, stirring every 10 mins for ultimate crunch.

The other day, I heard someone say, “I don’t want my daughters to learn how to cook. Anyone can cook. I want my daughters to learn how to make money, so they can outsource the cooking.”

I respectfully disagree for several reasons:

1. Reality Check: Outsourcing Isn’t Feasible for Most People

How many people do you know who are intelligent, had great grades, have respectable careers, and yet don’t make enough money to outsource three meals a day? Probably everyone I know. In fact, I don’t know a single person who can afford that kind of lifestyle. But how many people eat every day? Every single one of us, of course.

Learning to cook is a life skill, like budgeting, that helps us live sustainably and independently. It’s about being a competent adult.

2. You Can Learn More Than One Thing

Schools don’t just teach one subject for a reason. We teach our kids multiple skills to prepare them for the real world. Would you send your children to school to only learn English but not math? Or just math but no science? Of course not. The same logic applies here—learning to cook doesn’t mean sacrificing education or career skills. Both can coexist, and both are valuable.

3. Cooking Teaches Life Skills

Cooking isn’t just about following a recipe—it’s about problem-solving, time management, creativity, and even math (measuring, scaling, etc.).

When you cook, you think critically about ingredients, costs, and nutrition, all while using practical skills that are relevant in daily life. It’s a way of learning how to adapt and think on your feet, which translates into many areas beyond the kitchen.

4. Cooking Creates Memories and Connections

Some of my most treasured memories are tied to cooking with family. It’s not just about the food—it’s about bonding, building traditions, and creating memories. Do we want our children to grow up associating their happiest moments with family meals, or with takeout from a big chain? For me, the answer is clear. I want my kids to remember the laughter in the kitchen, the smells of home-cooked meals, and the sense of togetherness that food brings

Fast forward to this year—my son was sick on his birthday after waiting patiently all year, asking, “Is today my birthday?” and wishing for a Spiderman chocolate cake. I promised him one, but I couldn’t deliver…until a month later when he was feeling better.
